How often should patients be assessed during treatment?

The ASAM Criteria text describes in detail starting on page 110 the ongoing assessment process and principles to track patient progress and movement through the continuum of care (eg levels of care).

In general, ASAM’s criteria explicitly does not set timeline for reassessing patient need, but rather recommends assessment be conducted on an ongoing basis. In residential levels of care – which by the ASAM criteria means that a patient is in some sort of imminent danger, and needs 24 hour services – ongoing assessment, sometimes even more than once a day, is vital to ensure patient safety, as the patient condition is unstable and can change rapidly.
